Free Post-Mastectomy Supplies
Hi there – this post is specifically for any of my sistahs who are about to have their PBM (prophylactic bilateral mastectomy). I have a few things that The Center for Restorative Breast Surgery in New Orleans (NOLA, baby!) gave me after my surgery that I don’t need anymore. I hate to see them just sitting in a bag collecting dust so would like to donate them to you if you need them.
The first is a surprisingly cute, shiny, black, front closure, compression bra. On the front of the package it says it is recommended for breast augmentations and mastoplexy (I had to look that word up! It means: Plastic surgery in which the breasts are lifted or reshaped. Its a size 38 (no letters follow) – keep in mind that your reconstructed breasts will be swollen, so you may need a bra that is one or two sizes bigger than usual, at least until the swelling goes down. I have two of these to give away, one still has the packaging, the other doesn’t. Here’s a photo of the white version too.

The next item is a drain holder/belt. I actually have two sets of these, so have two to give away. One has four pouches on it, and has never been used, the other only has three pouches (I came home with only one drain left and must have left one of the pouches behind.) These drain holders are very convenient! They wrap around your waist and close with Velcro. Each pouch has a loop so the belt can be removed if you need to wash any part of it – they are made of cotton. Please specify if you’d need the four pouch holder, or if the three pouches would do.
The next item is just a simple rubber type band. You attach your drains to this and tie it around your neck during your shower. You’d be surprised that such a simple thing is such a big help! No need to worry about juggling drains – just easily hook them up to this band and you can shower without the drains being too much of a bother. Well, okay, who am I kidding, the drains are ALWAYS a bother, but this at least helps keep them out of the way a little bit. In the picture I show the pouches on the rubber band, but you wouldn’t really put the pouches on, you’d put the drains on, which typically have a loop of their own, so all 2-6 (depending on how many drains you end up needing – I had four at once in the beginning) will fit on here easily.
For the sake of fairness, and not really knowing how many will be interested I’ll just ask you to please let me know by leaving a comment for me here on my blog by Wednesday, April 14, 12:00 PST. Then I’ll put everyone’s name in a hat & draw names to see who gets what.

I could use one of the bras and one of the belts. My surgery is April 22, thank you!
I’ll add your name to the hat, Debbie!
Hi Debbie! I’m going in on the 22nd too. I’ll be thinking of you. Great idea Teri.
Hi Patricia! Best of luck to you!
I have a couple of surgical bras also, they aren’t as pretty as Teri’s, but they are queen size and have velcro on the shoulder areas. They are compression type bras.
That is awesome, Helen! I’ll draw names for yours too then, when it’s over I’ll give you the name & address of where to send them. Thank you!
Hi Teri- hope all is well with you. I am writing this note to ask for your help. I was wondering if you have any contacts to help me to get the word out about Poucharoo. The women who have used poucharoo love it -I still want to get more women the availability at their centers to use poucharoo. any contacts would be appreciated–
Hi Patti,
If you’d like to write up a few paragraphs and send it to me with a picture and link and I’ll be glad to feature you as a guest blogger.
My email is: terisblip@verizon.net
Teri
By the way, love the Vanna White poses there Teri, too cute! lol
That sort of cracked me up too! heehee
I’m not interested, but I just have to say that this is a GREAT idea. Yeah for waste reduction!
Thank you MML! And yeah, why not share what I don’t have any more use for?
Also, sorry to hear you are on a blogging hiatus btw (I just read your blog) – I have your blog subscribed with my google reader, so I’ll know when you’re back to it – so I definitely won’t forget you!
Teri you’re truly the best. And, just a related suggestion to perhaps connect with BRCAer Carmen Santiago as her sister Marilyn is having PBMs on Wednesday and apparently doesn’t have any financial coverage. She deserves a PBM gift shower! In only, hey?
Thanks, Marly! Okay, I will send them friend requests on facebook – I bet there are other post-mastectomy ladies out there too that would be willing to share items they don’t need anymore..no sense having people spend money on things that some could give away for free! We should actually start a discussion on the group page too…
My sister Marilyn Garrod is having PBM on wednesday of this week. She can use any assistance especially the drain holder she will not have reconstruction yet (no finances) thank you for any help. Carmen
Hi Carmen! Thank you for letting me know. I’m so sorry that she’s having such financial trouble right now! Does she not have insurance? In the U.S. there is a law that specifies if a woman has to have a mastectomy, then her insurance must cover the reconstruction option of her choice. Not sure where you live, but I just wanted to let you know of that…
If any other ladies have things like this to donate, please let me know, maybe we can get some stuff sent off to Marilyn so that it can arrive soon, since her surgery is Wednesday..
I love your pictures “modeling” the items!! Your so cute..haha!!
I guess you may have figured this out by now, but I’m kind of a dork!
Hi Teri,
I don’t need these items yet…I still have to get the courage to schedule the surgery. I just wanted to tell you that I think you are so awesome. It is so thoughtful of you to help other women in need. You are an inspiration. I hope to see you at the next FORCE meeting.
Love,
A Secret Admirer
(well, maybe not so secret)
Brenda Lam
Hi Brenda! It’s so good to hear from you again! Listen, even once I KNEW I was going to go ahead with the surgery, I still drug my feet for MONTHS before I picked up the phone to schedule the appointment. It’s not a decision to be made lightly, and I think it’s okay to drag our feet some. If there’s anything I can do to alleviate some of your fears, just let me know. I’m happy to answer any questions at all.
I’m not going to be able to make it to the next FORCE meeting (but I am going to the Joining FORCE’s conference in June!), but I am going to try my darnedest to make it to the next one. I have my stage 2, revision surgery coming up and want to be able to take part in the show aspect of the show & tell!
Take care!
Teri
I could possible use the Queen siz that Helen has and the shower thingy too!
Hi Lynda,
Send me your address again and I will send you the bras. I need to wash the one as I tried to wear it, but when the Doc said I didn’t need to wear it I didn’t after that.
So sweet, thank you for doing that!
Anything for my BRCA buds!
Hi,
Great idea. I have a prosthesis I would be willing to sell cheap and two bras for it…like a size 42d maybe.
willing to give them away if you pay shipping.
Jo
Thanks for the offer, Jo. If anyone responds I’ll give you their name/email address…
This is great Teri! Love you girl!
Fantastic idea!
Love you
xo
I don’t want them…..I’ve had enough. LOL!
You are all done!
Hi Teri- I really like your site– I am a nurse and I combined my care of women’s health and creativity and launched poucharoo. Poucharoo is a drain holder- holds up to 4 drains and comes in a pleasant, drawstring bag. I am just launching poucharoo and would love to get the word out– I certainly can donate some poucharoos. the poucharoos are made by the Raleigh Lions clinic for the Blind- visually impaired people-people helping people. My pleasure to help .. I originally made them myself for breast patients now trying to get a medical distributor– but I would love to help out———Patti–
Hi Patti! Thank you so much for the offer – that is wonderful! Thank you, thank you!
If there is anyone interested please let me know and I’ll put you in touch with Patti.
Hi there- just an update- I contacted NOLA- and the poucharoos are given to all their patients– it is loved by all– what a great center and you are a great person-thanks –patti@poucharoo.com
I am in dire need of the pockets for drains, and camisoles to conceal the drains so that I can attempt to wear my tops. I cannot afford the shirts that they sell on the internet to conceal drains. I have to go back to work while still having the drains in place so the best way to conceal these would be greatly appreciated. I am a single mother of two children and am in desperate need of assistance. Thanks.
Dana King
